After 12 years of conflict, Napoleon Bonaparte's forces were defeated by Louverture's successor, Jean-Jacques Dessalines (later Emperor Jacques I), who declared Haiti's sovereignty on 1 January 1804-the first independent nation of Latin America and the Caribbean, the second republic in the Americas, the first country in the Americas to eliminate slavery, and the only state in history established by a successful slave revolt. In the midst of the French Revolution (1789–99), slaves, maroons, and free people of color launched the Haitian Revolution (1791–1804), led by a former slave and the first black general of the French Army, Toussaint Louverture. French colonists established lucrative sugarcane plantations, worked by vast numbers of slaves brought from Africa, which made the colony one of the richest in the world. However, competing claims and settlements by the French led to the western portion of the island being ceded to France in 1697, which was subsequently named Saint-Domingue. The island was claimed by Spain and named La Española, forming part of the Spanish Empire until the early 17th century. Columbus subsequently founded the first European settlement in the Americas, La Navidad, on what is now the northeastern coast of Haiti. The first Europeans arrived on 5 December 1492 during the first voyage of Christopher Columbus, who initially believed he had found India or China. The island was originally inhabited by the indigenous Taíno people, who originated in South America. Haiti is 27,750 km 2 (10,714 sq mi) in size, the third largest country in the Caribbean by area, and has an estimated population of 11.4 million, making it the most populous country in the Caribbean. To its south-west lies the small Navassa Island, which is claimed by Haiti but is disputed as a United States territory under federal administration. It occupies the western three-eighths of the island which it shares with the Dominican Republic. Haiti ( / ˈ h eɪ t i/ ( listen) French: Haïti Haitian Creole: Ayiti ), officially the Republic of Haiti (French: République d'Haïti Haitian Creole: Repiblik d Ayiti), and formerly known as Hayti, is a country located on the island of Hispaniola in the Greater Antilles archipelago of the Caribbean Sea, east of Cuba and Jamaica, and south of The Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Kliban saw the ridiculousness of everything. He wasn’t making jokes about the world from within it, it seemed to me, but from far above it. Kliban had a series of books with titles like “Whack Your Porcupine” and “Never Eat Anything Bigger Than Your Head” and his humor completely blew me away with it’s absurdity and imagination and point of view. Dalton on 5th Ave and hang around the humor section looking at cartoon books, and that’s where I discovered B. We lived in Manhattan by that time so I would go to the B. The late 70s was a time when every gag cartoonist had two or three collections of their cartoons published (I would love it if that time came back. When I was 11 or 12 I read National Lampoon (my parents were very permissive) and Playboy (very, very permissive) and that’s where I first saw cartoonists like Charles Rodrigues and Gahan Wilson and Sam Gross. JD: I didn’t think about drawing cartoons for The New Yorker for a long time. Was it a slow realization that this was the place for you or did lightning strike one day when you saw, say, an Arnie Levin drawing or picked up a copy of a Mick Stevens cartoon collection? MM: What finally drove you to submit to The New Yorker. In school drawing became a way to get attention and approval and at the same time I could never quite get the hang of paying attention in class, so I used to fill up my notebooks with drawings, almost to the complete exclusion of schoolwork. Anyway, I used to redraw Don Martin’s comics, sometimes mimicking his drawings but sometimes putting my own characters in them. I attribute this interest to having always felt alienated myself as a child. They could have stepped off a spaceship from another galaxy the day before. They weren’t earthy and relatable or lovable – they were odd. Don Martin, the Pythons, Steve Martin – they all had that in common. His stuff had a quality to it that I would describe as “otherworldly.” That was always the feeling I was attracted to. I did read some cartoons but it was mostly Peanuts and a hell of a lot of MAD. My mom took me to see Mel Brooks movies like “Young Frankenstein” and “Blazing Saddles” which I know I was too young to see but she was very permissive about stuff like that. I remember my dad taking me to see the Marx Brothers film “Animal Crackers” when it was re-released to movie theaters in the early 70s, and that pretty much blew my mind. My parents had a sense of humor and so they would let me stay up to watch Johnny Carson if a comedian was on that I liked. I loved Steve Martin and Monty Python’s Flying Circus and George Carlin and Peter Sellers. I watched comedians on TV and my parents would buy me comedy albums. I didn’t read superhero comics and I didn’t like sports and I was indifferent to popular music. Crumb was (the first of many instances in which I will compare myself to living legends and find we have little in common). I had a talent for drawing from an early age, but I can’t say I was especially enchanted by comics or cartoons in the way that a Jules Feiffer or an R. JD: After I picked up the crayons – well, immediately after I probably drew some pictures of Sigmund the Sea Monster or Evel Knievel and then watched The Brady Bunch Goes to Watergate or something like that, but if you mean in the years after that’s different. MM: You say in the New Yorkers film that “the first time I could pick up a crayon, I could draw” - and then what happened? That was happening quite a few blocks away, and thus in a different reality. Not the burned-down post-apocalypse wasteland you see in pictures of The Bronx from the 70s. Botanical Gardens, The Bronx Zoo, and so forth. MM: So Joe, where in this great metropolis were you born? Dator recently agreed to be part of Ink Spill’s interview series. Though his subject matter ranges far and wide, through past and present, this native New Yorker has said that the cartoons he is“most proud of are the ones that are very specific to this city.” His work is addictive – I bet you can’t look at just one. Since arriving at The New Yorker in the summer of 2006, Joe Dator has done just that. Some are more different than others former New Yorker cartoon editor Lee Lorenz once said that the best cartoonists are the ones that create their own world. After a few years, we added an 8-quart partly because I knew I would use two at the same time often enough, partly because it was the Prime Day sale, and also because I wanted more space for certain recipes. This is the 6-quart Instant Pot I started out with. Nobody on a budget wants to throw away fifty percent of their rice every time they cook it! Not only did this waste a ton of her time, soaking it, scraping it off, and cleaning it up, but she said she eyeballed how much it was one night, and it was close to a half-cup of rice. Her complaints included the rice sometimes being crunchy and undercooked and the fact that the bottom of the Instant Pot insert was covered with a thick layer of burned-on rice. Making the switch to cooking real foods is a big commitment and the Instant Pot can be a huge time saver – like using it to cook dry beans even if you don’t have time to soak them – but it’s only helpful if it’s working the way it should be. She had heard that cooking rice in the Instant Pot was foolproof, but the method was giving her terrible trouble, and she wasn’t sure what she was doing wrong. I was talking with a friend recently about how to cook rice in the Instant Pot.

The UI, the animation, the spacing, the alignment, everything feels just right in the concept. In short, users should be able to directly set app’s notification preference right from that particular notification.Ībove is a nice work by Eike showing how notifications grouping can be implemented. Customization should include letting users set the priority of notifications from that app, muting or enable/disable grouping. I think on swiping right, we can have just one option, Customize. Being honest, even I don’t know how it can be made simpler, but one thing is that there are two ways to view notification actions, one by force-press and other by swiping to left and tapping on “View”. Notifications shouldn’t be this complicated. Simple Navigation : Right now, navigating through a notification is literally messed up, you can force-press to view options, swipe for other actions and tap to open the notification.Notifications Priority : One should be able to see notifications from selected apps on the top.Notifications Grouping : Option to enable grouping of notifications from the same app. Here is how I want notifications in iOS 12. I totally agree with Dieter that Android has better notification management and organization as compared to iOS. Right now, the state of notifications in iOS is pretty much messed up. Here are some of the areas in iOS which I think can be improved. Why isn’t this easy option, to be able to set your favorite app accessible from lock screen customizable in iOS? There are many ways in which Apple can make the OS more easy and quicker to navigate. Quick example, Camera app is something everyone uses but not everyone’s priority would be to open Camera app from the lock screen, someone who spends lots of time on WhatsApp might want to be able to access WhatsApp quickly from lock screen, or someone who writes might want to open Notes app, or someone who likes listening to music might want to access their favourite Music app from lock screen with a single swipe. I’ve been using iOS for couple years now and I feel there are lots of areas in which Apple can really enhance the usability in iOS. Good thing, those are just rumors and no one knows what’s going to be in iOS 12. And forget about the ARM-powered MacBook Air we keep hearing whispers about.A few weeks back I read rumors that iOS 12 is not going to be a major upgrade over iOS 11 and that got me not-so-interested in the upcoming update which Apple is going to unveil in WWDC 2018 which will be held in June. There won’t be a dramatic unveiling of the new Mac Pro or a new $99 HomePod mini. My guess is that the show will be relatively dull from a new-product standpoint, with the usual enhancements to iOS and macOS, some new watchOS features, and maybe a sneak peek at Apple’s upcoming video service. That probably means there aren’t any new products hiding up their sleeves.
